AWS & VMware: Why You Can Have it All Now
Sometimes it’s easy to miss something that is actually right in front of you.
At least that’s what it was like for my colleague (who’s going to remain nameless..!).
He’d attended the keynote at VMworld in Barcelona and was in the VMVillage. In his defence, I think he was a little distracted, presumably he was thinking how great the partnership between AWS and VMware would be for some of our customers. Anyway, he was going to meet me outside in one of the bustling gardens, he spots my table, and quickens his pace, until, that is, he walks full tilt, face-first into the glass wall separating him and I.
Sure, it made a heck of a bang (think of a foot pedal on a bass drum), he bounces backwards completely baffled as to why he was stopped so suddenly. I see confusion, shock, anger register on his face, and then there is this wonderful moment where all of those expressions are pushed aside by sheer hope. Surely… surely it was possible that no-one even noticed!
He found the door (clearly signed and a metre to his left) and his hastily constructed air of nonchalance collapsed when he saw me and pretty much everyone else in a very busy garden looking right back at him. I don’t think he even noticed the presentation session behind him on the other side of the glass, where 50 people tried to pretend that they hadn’t seen.
I’m sure he isn’t the first and I’m sure he won’t be the last because sometimes it is easy to miss something that is right there in front of you.
So why had the VMware and AWS announcement so distracted my colleague?!
Well the possibilities are genuinely exciting for the Enterprise:
- Deploy VMware Software Defined environments (SDDC) on bare-metal in AWS for any Application – complete elasticity
- Massively scalable Hybrid Cloud without reinventing your IT department
- Use the same VMware management tools and processes
- Guarantee the same security controls wherever a workload resides
- Seamlessly burst into the Cloud, intelligently use the resources at your disposal
- Automation right across on-premise to the Cloud
- Replicate your Infrastructure in the Cloud and scale rapidly for Disaster Recovery
There are loads more and there certainly was a great deal of excitement about the announcement.
But here’s the rub, the Enterprise is going to have to be patient (Beta in early 2017, but it will be some months yet before you can use the service). In the meantime, you’ll have to treat your on-premise infrastructure and your Cloud as two separate things.
But that’s not really true…VMware are keen that you should be able to consume whatever Cloud you want, but that you should be able to manage it in the same way that you manage your on-premise platform.
VMware have also partnered with IBM Cloud and their SoftLayer offering, only this happened a year ago and is completely ready on a Global Scale. The solution boasts all of the benefits listed above and includes: Cloud Foundation; Pre-built and VMware approved reference architectures; Cloud Migration Services; Business Continuity with partnerships like Veeam; Global 10Gbps Network; Bare-metal and an ecosystem of integrated partnerships.
The announcements around the VMware/AWS have certainly turned heads and for very good reason… Cloud allows you to start small, start now and scale forever.
Yet when I spoke to various Enterprise customers there was a enthusiasm to start now but the perception they couldn’t. Well I’m here to tell you that you can. If you like the sound of a true Hybrid Cloud approach with VMware, talk to us and we’ll show you how you can deploy massively scalable Hybrid Cloud without re-inventing the wheel, and you can do it today.
As my red-faced colleague will attest, it might be worth taking another look before you take that next step.

P.S. If you did happen to see the window event described above and managed to get footage I would be forever in your debt if you could send it to me.
