Gyrocom Launches Utility Computing Proposition

Gyrocom today announced the launch of its Utility Computing proposition developed to help organisations maximise efficiencies within their public, private or hybrid cloud deployments.

Gyrocom work with strategic partners to define an organisation’s compute requirements in terms of a single ‘supply’ and ‘demand’ equation.  Gyrocom’s Utility Computing model is achieved through the adoption of a unique single and consistent ‘unit of compute’ – the real measure of a true utility.  The ‘unit of compute’ is equivalent to the kilowatt hour in electricity terms and is generated through a patent pending algorithm.  The standard unit of compute allows organisations to quantify how much computing resources are available within their existing infrastructure, how much are needed and what they cost to produce.

Gyrocom’s Utility Computing proposition is designed to help enterprise organisations build and deploy their own private cloud or manage their infrastructure within an integrated public cloud.  All from one supplier, with a single unit of measurement and a single utility based bill.

Riverbed Releases New Granite Product Family

Riverbed's Edge Virtual Server Infrastructure Extends the Boundaries of the Data Center to the Edge of the Enterprise.

Riverbed, the IT performance company, today announced a new architectural approach called edge virtual server infrastructure (edge-VSI) that does for edge servers what virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) did for desktops:  it allows IT to consolidate and manage all edge servers in the data center. But unlike VDI, edge-VSI does this while delivering 20-50% lower total cost of ownership (TCO).  Riverbed® GraniteTM is the revolutionary new product that enables edge-VSI. With Granite, global enterprises can achieve complete consolidation of edge applications, servers and storage to the data center, while delivering services to the edge of the enterprise as if they were local. Edge-VSI is complementary to wide area network (WAN) optimization, accelerating performance for applications and use cases not addressed by any WAN optimization approach today.  Read the full article below:

Riverbed announces Riverbed® Stingray™

Riverbed announces Riverbed® Stingray™, the new portfolio of asymmetric software- and virtual-based offerings, including application delivery controllers (ADC), Web content optimization (WCO) and Web application firewalls.

Enterprise customers are investing in infrastructure that enables new and flexible approaches as they continue to virtualize data centers and migrate to the cloud. The challenge with shifting to a private, public or hybrid cloud environment is that the customer needs to optimize applications and data from the data center to end users across the country or around the world. Riverbed is enabling enterprises to migrate to, and receive the greatest benefits of, modern data center architectures by providing flexible application delivery across private and public clouds. Riverbed Stingray enables enterprises to host applications in any physical, virtual or cloud environment, and to cost-effectively scale application acceleration and optimization as needed, on-demand.  Read the full article below:

WiFi users blissfully ignorant about real security.

New research conducted on behalf of the Wi-Fi Alliance shows that while wireless users are making strides on the security front, they’re still leaving their Wi-Fi networks too open to intruders.

The survey, conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of the Wi-Fi Alliance, found that 86% of Wi-Fi users have taken basic privacy and security steps in setting up their access points and routers. However, while 97% of those surveyed said they believe the data on their devices and networks is “safe and secure,” these same people scored an average of 66% when asked about a series of recommended security/privacy steps that they’ve taken. Some 59% have failed to use passwords meeting basic security criteria, only 62% have auto-sharing turned off and just 18% use VPNs when on a wireless hotspot.

The Wi-Fi Alliance recommends enabling WPA2, creating strong Wi-Fi network passwords (at least 8 characters long, with a mix of letters and symbols) and changing them regularly, and turning off automatic sharing on devices to avoid connecting to suspect networks.
